Tottenham - Aston (2010-02-06)

E-mail Print PDF
England Premiership

Tottenham is still at the 4th place, but it seems like their form is slowly dropping so the fans from White Hart Lane are probably starting to worry whether Harry Redknapp has got what it takes for his team to be participating in the CL next season. A few disappointing defeats, such as the draws against Hull and Birmingham as well as the defeat to Liverpool, are all the reason why there is now only a 2-point difference between them and Aston Villa. During midweek, the Spurs managed to get to the 5th round of FA Cup as they won in the rematch at the Elland Road, but there is a fear that participation in that cup might drag their Premiership focus away. One of the best players for the London side in that match was Jermaine Defoe, who seemed fresh and proved the critiques that he possesses great quality. Younes Kaboul and Eidur Gudjohnsen will probably be in the contention for this clash, if not as starters than surely as reserves. Roman Pavlychenko, Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Aaron Lennon, Jonathan Woodgate all definitely won’t play, while Ladley King will have to undergo a fitness test before his status will be known.

Love to sit back and wait for their chance

Aston Villa is a side that loves to play counterattacks no matter some people have judged Martin O’Neill and his team’s playing style, but 5 wins in the past 6 games on the road in all competitions, including a win at the Old Trafford, just prove he leads this club in a great fashion. Aston Villa recorded yet another terrific result, by winning 2:0 at a very tough road game at Craven Cottage, which was only 3rd Fulham’s home loss this season. It should be noted that they recorded that win in a routine manner as both goals were scored in the first half already. Villa will again be able to count on John Carew, who had to miss the last 4 matches due to a knee injury. The Norwegian practiced with no problems during the week and is certainly in O’Neill’s plans. Stephen Warnock is still struggling with an injury he suffered in the FA Cup match vs.Brighton last month, and his return to the pitch is expected towards the end of this month when the League Cup finals against MU will be played. Captain Stiliyan Petrov will probably once again start even though he’s been carrying a minor injury for quite some time.

Goal feast yet again

Tottenham traditionally loves to play against Villa at home, but in the past few seasons, Vilal managed to leave the White Hart Lane undefeated. Two years ago, these sides have played a fantastic clash that ended 4:4, while last season Birmingham side took away all 3 points. This is a clash where the visitors will surely get a chance to play their game as Tottenham will have to chase victory from the start. Aston Villa’s counters can be deadly, but Tottenham has got a very quality offensive line so yet another goal feast is expected.
