Arsenal - Aston (2009-12-27)

E-mail Print PDF
England Premiership

Arsenal won in the last 12 out of their 13 matches they played at home this season in all competitions, but a 3:0 defeat to Chelsea is still in their memory. The Gunners were having their chances for quite a long time, but I didn’t get an impression that they had enough skill to break down the Blues’ resistance, and considering a lot of injuries they’re dealing with, a very similar scenario is possible here as well against a very tough Villa defense. Unlike their rivals, Arsenal’s defense didn’t seem too confident this season but everything seemed much better when they played at their Emirates stadium as they were mostly controlling the ball possession. Cesc Fabregas could play at this game as he already missed the game against Hull. Armand Traore could also return, while Sagna is fully fit and ready to take his place in the starting lineup. Bendtner, Clichy, Djourou, Gibbs, van Persie and Rosicky will probably still be sidelined.

Not afraid of the great ones

Aston Villa is at the 4th spot of the Premiership and will do their best in order to once again prove their quality. Villa recorded a few really excellent results this season and after beating Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea, it could be said they don’t have too much fear when entering the matches against “the big four”. Villa will enter this game after 4 consecutive wins during which they haven’t conceded a single goal and statistically, they have the best defense in the league as they recorded only 14 goals. The stats also indicate they scored at least one goal in every game this season, so it can be expected that won’t be the case this time again. Bouma and Davies probably won’t be able to start the game due to injuries, same goes for Emile Heskey, meaning John Carew will get a chance from the beginning.

Arsenal favored too much

This is a clash of two completely different playing styles. Arsenal will do everything to keep the possession as much as possible, while Aston Villa will mostly focus on the counterattacks. How effective Villa’s tactics is, we could witness at the Old Trafford and Anfield, so it’s up to Arsenal to turn their possession into goals. Although Arsenal is a favorite at this match, the odds on a home win is just too small considering the 2nd placed and 4th placed teams will meet each other. Also it should be emphasized that the Birmingham side already won in Manchester and Liverpool this season so that’s why I’d suggest you to try with the surprise and back the visitors on level ball.
